Borderlands

FPS RPGs are not very common, but can be very exciting to play. Most of you have probably played, or heard good words, about Fallout 3. Borderlands (released in 2009) is also an FPS RPG which focusses a bit more on your weapons and armor which can be found in treasure chests, or looted from your enemies. The game is very visually unique, as objects looks like 2d cardboard cutouts (kind of)

The storyline is quite basic. You are a mercenary in a desolate planet and you are given missions to kill bandits and monsters. There are several NPC characters with unique personalities, and several types of monsters (with different weaknesses), which makes the repetitiveness of the kill-loot-kill bearable. There are 4 classes to choose from, depending on your weapon preference and playstyle:

  • Berserker - Super tanky and stronk at melee combat
  • Siren - Assassin, can deal large damage as you exit Phase Walk (invisibility)
  • Soldier - Auto-Turrets and support abilities (health and ammo regeneration)
  • Hunter - Excels with sniper rifles and pets
Berserker Skill Tree: Brawler, Tank, Blaster
Unfortunately, there is little visual character customisation. But there are specialisations within each class, like a 'talent tree'

However, what makes this game addictive is the amount of customizability on your guns, as the stats on all of the guns are randomly generated. Each gun will have its own unique zoom power, melee damage, reload speed and some will have elemental damage or other effects. There is always a hunt to find weapon and shield upgrades.

There is also multiplayer game mode where monsters are stronger and teamwork is good. Borderlands 2 should be hitting the shelves some time later this year.

tl;dr
+ high customizability
+ >100 hours of unique gameplay with expansion packs
+ unique graphics
- sometimes too repetitve
8/10

Battlefield 3

When Battlefield 3 was released, I was pretty certain that I wasn't going to bother with it. I'm not a big fan of the BF series and therefore thought it would be a waste of $80. Thankfully, my friend persisted for me to buy it and after playing for 5 hours straight, I realised Battlefield 3 is easily the best first-person shooter of 2011.

I can't even think of a way to describe the graphics in BF3. They are simply breath-taking. You can try watching 1080p videos on youtube, or just try it for yourself and you will not disappointed, especially if you can run this beast on ultra settings.

Multiplayer? Each game mode utilizes a different section of each map and each map has their very own unique feel and features. The maps are fairly large scale, which will mean there is always some excitement in discovering new routes, or even just exploring.

In addition to the hours of exploring, lies the bottomless, infinite number of choices of play style. Do you like flying planes? or helicopters? Or driving tanks? Or rushing close quarters with SMGs? Or sniping from the cliff side? There are many play styles you can adopt and their effectiveness depends on your skill and involvement in your role. Everything is decided by the player, instead of a metagame (like other MMOs).

tl;dr:
amazing graphics
amazing online multiplayer
game does not get boring
9/10

Skyrim

First Thoughts
SKYRIM has received plenty of credit for its innovative storyline and excellent graphics and I can definitely confirm this. With graphics settings turned up high the scenery looks nothing short of realistic. Also the interaction between NPCs is realistic and not overdone.

However, what makes it difficult for me to continue and finish the game is the repetitveness in combat scenarios. I started off with a magic user specialising in destruction/alteration. After hitting level 12, I have little motivation to play this game. Maybe I'll continue playing when I have more free time.

Overall I'd give it 7.5/10

Starcraft II

Starcraft II is another one of my favourite games. I think I'll probably end up posting my favourite replays/clips/commentaries. It is always so competitive, fast-paced and thrilling, especially in major tournaments. GSL // Dreamhack // MLG // IGL // NASL // TSL

What about me?
I play protoss, was diamond league before I took a long break. But now I'm back! Fave player is probably HuK.

Heroes of Newerth

Downloading HoN for the first time atm. I'm a bit skeptical even though many people say its better than DotA/DotA2. To me it just seemed like a cheap imitation. The file size is larger than LoL but the graphics look much better. Anyways, time to own some noob trash.

Let's Play Some Games!

DOTA (and beta key give-away)

Defense of the Ancients
DotA hasn't ever been the biggest MMO, especially in Australia or USA, but it is definitely one of my favourites. Before League of Legends (which I'll review in another post), however, it was the biggest and best of its genre, the "Aeon of Strife"/MOBA.Unfortunately, for newer players, it takes a while to pick up unlike LoL and HoN.

I occasionally compete in local LAN tournaments, where competitive DotA gets truly exciting. It's all about your micro, teamwork and whatever unique strategy your team can come up with in the ever-changing metagame.

Thoughts on DotA 2
The closed beta has been running for quite a while but won't be released until about August. Whilst playing the beta, I was quite surprised to find the engine was stable and very playable. There was little lag and it was quick to find a game and launch yourself into the battle. Props to Valve. The metagame itself is different from DotA 1, as many DotA heroes are not yet created for DotA 2. However it continuously evolves with the addition of new heroes every update.

The beta is achieving similar results to Starcraft 2 with already several tournaments being held, both online and LAN. This tells us that, by the time of full release, DotA 2 will be an extremely popular competitve MMO and likely to top LoL and HoN, its biggest rivals.
